This will be a continuing series where we ask the members of the 2025 class for ODU football the same questions to get to know them better and learn more about their recruitment at Old Dominion. Next up in this series for the 2025 class, Dawson Johnson.

Dawson is a 6'4, 235 lb., Tight End from Denver, Colorado, and transfers here from the University of Florida. He's rated as a 3* recruit on 24/7 and received offers from Tulane, UNLV, ECU, Army, UTEP, Kennesaw State and Ohio. Fun fact, Dawson attended Cherry Creek High School, which happens to be the rival of Coach Rahne’s high school and the same school Kyle Shanahan played at.

Do you have a nickname you prefer to go by?

I usually go by Dawson but my friends call me DJ or Dolphin.

Who was your lead recruiter and how would you describe your relationship with the staff?

Coach Weeks and Coach Decker. I’ve developed a great relationship with them and can already tell the family bond all of the coaches and the team has.

On your visit, did anything stand out for you and if so, what?

The knowledge of the coaching staff was the most notable thing. The plan they have for the team and schemes they have drawn up are due for success.

What other offers were you considering?

I was considering UNLV, ECU and Tulane.

What made you pick ODU over your other offers?

The plan the coaches have for me, the need for a tight end and the style of the offense. I feel that will suit me perfectly.

If you had to pick a player to compare your game to, who would you pick and why?

I feel like I play similarly to Brock Bowers.

What has been your favorite moment or highlight from your football career so far?

My favorite moment in football is definitely winning the state championship my junior year.

If you weren’t playing football, what other sport would you want to play in college?

Lacrosse, I played lacrosse my whole life until my sophomore year of high school.

If you were a boxer or UFC fighter, what would your entrance music be?

Skrilla by Kodak Black.

What is your message for Monarch Nation?

I’m coming to win and we’re coming for the Sun Belt!
