April Fool’s Day marked the second time that ODU Football’s spring practice sessions were open for the media. While there were no pranks there was plenty of action to see. The team donned helmets and shoulder pads on this sunny afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. They ran some 11 vs 11, 7 vs 7 and various drills.
This practice was much more intense and spirited than the last time we got to see them. We are at just about the half-way point of spring practice, with yesterday's practice marking the seventh session. The fifteenth and final session of spring ball will be the Spring Game, which will be open to the pubic and held at 2:00 pm on April 19th at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Be sure to attend the Spring Game and get a good look at these Monarchs for yourself, but in the meantime I will attend when there is media availability and bring you some ODU Spring Football Coverage. Without further ado let’s get to my observations:
- The wide receivers with Colton Joseph and the first unit were TJ Lott (slot), Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (outside) and Tre Brown (outside).
- The offensive line with Colton on the same unit (from left to right) was Zach Barlev, Skylar Grant, Ryan Joyce, Connor Drake and Stephon Dubose-Bourne.
- Quinn Henicle had some rough moments with 2 interceptions, one being a pick 6 by DE Javen Gibson. But Quinn also had some good moments. His best was a beautiful pass to the corner of the endzone where TE Dawson Johnson made a great catch for a touchdown (this was easily my play of the day).
- At the end of practice they ran some return drills, RB Devin Roche was the first returner and he looked really fast and elusive. Following Roche were QB Ryan Huff and QB Quinn Henicle as kick returners. It doesn't really need to be said but obviously neither will be a returner in a game. But it was nice to see them show what they could do in the open field.
- It was good to see a number of Class of 2026 recruits in attendance at this practice.
It’s spring and a lot can change between now and August 30th when Old Dominion kicks off their 2025 campaign against Indiana but there is a lot to be excited about for ODU Football this year! Hope you enjoy the content! The next practice with media availability is April 8th. So until then, GO MONARCHS!
